The New Medicine Service (NMS) is an advanced NHS service offered by accredited community pharmacists. It provides support to patients who have been newly prescribed a medicine for a long-term condition. The goal of the service is to help patients understand and use their new medication correctly, leading to better health outcomes and improved medicine adherence.

The NMS involves a series of consultations with the pharmacist over several weeks, which can take place in person or over the phone. During these appointments, the pharmacist discusses the patient's experience with the new medicine, answers questions, and provides advice on any side effects or concerns.

Why is NMS accreditation important?

For locum pharmacists, gaining NMS accreditation through a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) provider is highly recommended. It is a valuable qualification that demonstrates your ability to provide a key service that many pharmacies offer.

Having this accreditation can:

  • Increase your booking opportunities: Pharmacies are more likely to book a locum who is accredited to deliver advanced services like NMS.

  • Enhance your professional standing: It shows a commitment to professional development and providing a higher level of care.

  • Contribute to a pharmacy's performance: By providing NMS, you help the pharmacy meet its service targets and contribute to the overall quality of care.
