A police check is a background check that provides information about a person's criminal history. This helps employers, especially those in sensitive fields, to make safe hiring decisions.

The specific name and type of check depend on where you live and work in the UK.

Police Checks by Location

  • England and Wales: The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) carries out police checks. The level of check required (Basic, Standard, or Enhanced) depends on the role you are applying for.

  • Scotland: The Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme is used for those working with children or vulnerable adults.

  • Northern Ireland: AccessNI provides police checks for people working in Northern Ireland.
